Bordeaux, France / EuroWire / – Extensive wildfires raging through southwestern France and parts of the Iberian Peninsula have prompted the evacuation of close to 260,000 residents and vacationers from major tourist hotspots. These fires, exacerbated by consecutive heatwaves, dry soil, and unpredictable wind patterns, have swept across coastal regions near Bordeaux and rural zones west of Madrid. Emergency services in both countries declared emergency statuses as thick smoke clouds disrupted key regional transportation networks and led to the closure of multiple resort areas. Local authorities confirmed that prolonged periods of high heat created extreme fire hazards, resulting in widespread displacement orders to safeguard public safety.

In France, officials mandated mass evacuations across the Gironde department after fires threatened key holiday communities along the Atlantic coast. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced that about 200,000 individuals were relocated to temporary shelters, describing the operation as potentially the largest civilian evacuation in peacetime history. The French government mobilized 1,500 military personnel from the French Armed Forces to assist civilian emergency teams. Additionally, military aircraft, including an Airbus A400M Atlas equipped with specialized water-dropping systems, were dispatched to combat fires in remote forested areas.

Regional authorities in southwestern France ordered the phased evacuation of the entire Cap Ferret peninsula as flames consumed thousands of hectares of coastal pine forests. Officials from the Prefecture of Gironde confirmed that emergency responders set up temporary reception centers inside exhibition halls in Bordeaux to accommodate incoming families. Medical aid, temporary accommodations, and masks for protection against dense smoke from the fires were provided to evacuees. Firefighting teams received reinforcement units from the Paris Fire Brigade and aerial firefighting resources from European partner countries, as firefighting efforts stretched regional capacities.

Across the border in Spain, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited affected fire zones west of Madrid, where multiple fires merged into a single large wildfire. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska confirmed that over 60,000 residents and tourists had been evacuated from towns within the Madrid region. Emergency units from the Military Emergencies Unit were deployed to establish protective perimeters around at-risk communities. Meanwhile, local authorities near Valencia reported one death after a separate wildfire spread through rural farmland, leading to additional evacuations in the area.

Deployment of Military Resources and Aerial Firefighting Equipment

Relief efforts intensified through the European Civil Protection Mechanism as both nations sought specialized aerial firefighting aid. Aircraft provided by Italy, Greece, Portugal, and the Netherlands arrived to perform water drops over zones identified as high risk in Spain. At the same time, France received support from Croatia, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic in the form of heavy lift helicopters and aircraft. The European Forest Fire Information System reported that the total area burned across EU member states during this summer’s fire season reached record levels.

These widespread wildfires have displaced nearly 260,000 individuals near tourist destinations in France and Spain during the peak summer travel period in the northern hemisphere, disrupting regional rail and road traffic. Travel advisories from foreign diplomatic services urged travelers in both countries to stay updated through local news and follow safety directives issued by municipal authorities. Many coastal resorts and mountain trail access points saw cancellations of bookings, as authorities restricted public access to forested parks and hiking areas. Emergency teams continue to establish containment lines and monitor weather forecasts for potential shifts in wind conditions that could influence fire spread.

Both countries’ emergency agencies maintained continuous surveillance as crews worked tirelessly to protect key infrastructure and residential zones. In major urban centers like Madrid and Bordeaux, health officials issued air quality warnings, advising vulnerable populations to remain indoors with windows closed due to heavy smoke and ash. Local logistics teams are actively distributing emergency supplies, drinking water, and hygiene kits to those displaced in temporary shelters. Authorities stressed that firefighting efforts will continue across all affected sectors until weather conditions improve and fire lines are fully secured.
