Russia Experiences 2.5 Million Foreign Visitors in First Half of 2026, Driven by Growth in China and Other Markets

MOSCOW / RankWire.AI / – Amidst ongoing efforts to boost international tourism, Russia welcomed a total of 2.5 million foreign visitors during the initial six months of 2026, marking a 20.1% increase compared to the same period the previous year. China remained the leading source of foreign travelers, representing over 22% of all international arrivals. These latest statistics underscore a continued upward trend in Russia’s inbound tourism sector for January through June. Nikita Kondratiev, a senior official at the Russian Ministry of Economic Development, shared these figures during meetings held in Shenyang, China.

Russia draws 2.5 million foreign tourists in first half 2026
Russia’s foreign tourism market grew in early 2026, with China leading inbound travel.

The data derive from official tourism statistics that track foreign visitors utilizing collective accommodation facilities across Russia. Additionally, Rosstat data revealed that Russians undertook 43.2 million domestic trips during the first half of 2026, a rise of 4.3% compared to the same period in 2025. As a result, inbound tourism grew at a faster yearly rate than domestic tourism, based on the different official measures used for each category.

China maintained its position as the primary source of foreign visitors to Russia in the first half of 2026. Other notable source markets included travelers from Persian Gulf nations, Turkey, and India. Foreign tourists also extended their journeys beyond Moscow and St. Petersburg, visiting locations such as Murmansk, Vladivostok, and Kazan. Russian officials have also reported the existence of direct international air routes connecting with 34 destinations, including several countries in Asia and the Middle East.

China Continues to Lead Russia’s International Tourist Arrivals

The latest tourism data were presented at a Tourism Council meeting of the Greater Tumen Initiative held in Shenyang. Attendees also participated in a seminar focusing on inbound tourism in Northeast Asia. Discussions covered cross-border travel initiatives involving Russia, China, and Mongolia, including progress on the historic Great Tea Road tourism route, which has entered the implementation phase and is expected to encompass about 20 regions within Russia.

The planned Russian segment of the Great Tea Road stretches from the Far East and Siberia through the Urals and Volga regions, continuing toward Moscow and St. Petersburg. Other projects highlighted during the meetings included tourism connectivity between Blagoveshchensk and Heihe, as well as development efforts around Vladivostok. Additionally, delegates discussed the Trans-Siberian Railway, the Lake Baikal area, and scientific tourism linked to the Vostochny Cosmodrome.

Visa Regulations Between Russia and China Are Evolving

As international travel between the two countries increases, visa policies have been adjusted accordingly. Russia has extended visa-free entry for eligible Chinese citizens until Dec. 31, 2027, while China has similarly prolonged its visa-free policy for Russian nationals through the same date. The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that ordinary Russian passport holders can visit without a visa for up to 30 days for purposes such as tourism, business, family visits, exchanges, and transit.

The first-half figures are part of a broader trend of rising cross-border movement. According to Chinese official data, 154,200 Chinese tourists traveled to Russia during the first quarter of 2026, representing a 44% increase year-on-year. Russia ranked second among China’s primary inbound visitor sources during this period. The recent Russian tourism figures place China at the top of Russia’s foreign visitor market, accounting for more than 20% of all international arrivals recorded.
