EU Returns Supported by Frontex Surpass 33,000 in Early 2026

WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – Frontex facilitated over 33,000 repatriations from EU member states to non-EU nations in the first half of 2026. This number increased from approximately 30,000 during the same period in the previous year. Of those, about 21,000 individuals returned voluntarily, compared to roughly 19,000 in 2025. According to agency data released on Sept. 7, the total number of Frontex-supported returns since 2022 now stands at around 215,000 people.

Frontex-supported EU returns rise above 33,000 in 2026
Frontex return operations increased across EU member states in the first half of 2026.

The European Border and Coast Guard Agency aids national authorities after a person receives an enforceable return decision, which is issued after exhausting legal options to remain within the EU. The decision determines whether the return is voluntary or enforced. Voluntary returns involve compliance with the decision, whereas forced returns are carried out when an individual refuses to leave. The agency supports both types of repatriation processes.

Germany, France, Cyprus, Belgium, and Sweden reported the highest counts of agency-supported returns between January and June. The primary nationalities of returnees included individuals from Türkiye, Syria, Georgia, Colombia, India, Brazil, Albania, Morocco, Nigeria, and Iraq. During this period, Frontex deployed 109 Return Specialists across 15 member states. Additionally, 118 Return Escort and Support Officers operated in 11 member states to assist with travel arrangements, airport procedures, and flight logistics.

    Most Repatriations Are Voluntary

In the first half of 2026, nearly 14,000 individuals registered for EU reintegration assistance, a significant increase from around 8,000 registrations during the same timeframe in 2025. More than 80% of these participants returned voluntarily. Reintegration services include vocational training, counseling, and grants for small businesses once individuals go back to their home countries. Member states may also enroll other eligible returnees into the program.

Return specialists assist national authorities by managing cases, explaining available support options, and obtaining identity documents from countries of origin. Escort and support officers accompany some returnees and handle administrative procedures related to departures. Hans Leijtens, Frontex’s Executive Director, emphasized that operations must adhere to legal standards while ensuring safety and dignity. He also noted the agency’s focus on voluntary returns and reintegration aid, pointing out that such approaches can lessen staffing and logistical challenges associated with forced removals.

EU Return Policies Are Progressing Through Legislative Channels

These latest statistics follow the European Union reaching a provisional consensus on shared return rules on June 1. The European Parliament endorsed its first-reading position on June 17 with 418 votes in favor, 218 against, and 30 abstentions. The framework targets third-country nationals who do not have a legal right to stay in member states, establishing cooperation responsibilities and introducing a European Return Order to facilitate recognition of return decisions throughout the EU.

The negotiated text allows for the establishment of return hubs outside the EU under arrangements compliant with international law and human rights standards, explicitly excluding unaccompanied minors from these provisions. It also specifies measures for individuals considered security threats and maintains the voluntary basis for mutual recognition of return decisions for the time being. The 2026 figures indicate a higher volume of EU return operations compared to the previous year, with voluntary returns still representing the majority of cases supported by Frontex.
