    EuroWire, BERLIN: Power outages affected approximately 50,000 households and 2,000 commercial properties in the southwest of Berlin on Saturday after a fire damaged a high-voltage cable bridge near the Lichterfelde power station, according to Stromnetz Berlin, the city’s electricity network operator. The incident occurred on a cable bridge spanning the Teltow Canal, disrupting electricity transmission to several neighborhoods in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district. Stromnetz Berlin reported that the fire caused significant damage to multiple underground and overhead cables, prompting emergency shutdowns to prevent further system overloads. Fire crews brought the blaze under control within hours, allowing engineers to begin assessing the damage and restoring power in stages.

Berlin police confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire. Stromnetz Berlin said it was conducting a full technical assessment to determine the extent of the damage to the network’s underground and overhead cables. The operator added that power restoration was progressing according to plan, with most residential areas expected to be reconnected within the same day. Berlin’s municipal authorities stated that infrastructure inspections will be reviewed in cooperation with federal energy regulators following the incident to ensure system reliability and resilience. As of Saturday evening, power was restored to most affected households and commercial premises, with remaining localized disruptions expected to be resolved as technical inspections conclude.
