EU allocates €2.3 million to bolster Africa’s fight against cholera outbreaks

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – Cholera remains a critical health challenge across several African nations, prompting international aid efforts. In response to the rising number of cases during 2026, the European Commission has committed €2.3 million in emergency humanitarian funding aimed at combating cholera outbreaks in West and Central Africa. This financial support will be directed towards Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad. Officials explained that the funds will be used for treatment initiatives, disease surveillance, access to clean water, and sanitation improvements. The announcement coincides with a surge in cholera cases across multiple African countries during 2026, with Nigeria experiencing a notable spike concentrated mainly in Borno State.

EU sends €2.3 million to strengthen Africa cholera response
EU emergency funding supports cholera response efforts across four African countries.

Nigeria is set to receive €1.5 million, representing the largest portion of the emergency aid package. This funding will facilitate the expansion of intervention teams, the distribution of cholera kits, and other vital supplies. Additionally, it will support the treatment of water sources at public points and households. Part of the allocated funds will be used to strengthen disease surveillance in remote regions. The program also emphasizes case management, risk communication, and community education, as health teams work to limit the spread within affected communities.

According to the most recent World Health Organization data, there have been 90,049 reported cholera cases across 18 countries in Africa up to June 28, with 1,528 deaths recorded. Nigeria alone reported 26,848 cases and 181 fatalities during this period. In June, the country documented 19,887 new cases and 97 deaths. WHO indicated that Borno State accounted for over 95% of Nigeria’s reported cases in 2026, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno among the most affected regions.

Funding focuses on treatment, water access, and surveillance enhancements

The Central African Republic will benefit from €500,000 allocated for case management, vaccination efforts, and water, sanitation, and hygiene programs. The funding will also bolster disease surveillance, detection, and community engagement activities. Support will be provided for safe and respectful burials when necessary during outbreak responses. WHO data shows 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths in the country through June 28. The European Commission stated that this aid is part of its emergency humanitarian response to the outbreaks impacting the four nations.

Cameroon will receive €100,000 to bolster outbreak containment and patient care in affected villages. The funds will be used to hire additional humanitarian staff, procure essential medicines, establish cholera treatment units, and set up oral rehydration points. WHO’s reports show 108 cases and six deaths in Cameroon through June 28. Chad will get €200,000 for water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives, along with community surveillance and case management support. During the same period, Chad registered 109 cases and three deaths.

Nigeria’s outbreak surge drives regional case numbers upward

In June, WHO reported 27,954 new cholera cases across 12 countries in the African Region, representing a 95% increase from May. The region also saw 284 cholera-related deaths that month. Nigeria recorded the highest number of new cases, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. WHO attributed the rise in Nigeria primarily to the outbreak in Borno State, where ongoing conflict, displacement, poor sanitation, and rainfall have heightened the risk of cholera transmission.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Severe infections can lead to dehydration and require immediate treatment. The EU’s financial aid aims to support efforts to interrupt the disease’s spread and improve healthcare access in affected regions. The total aid package of €2.3 million for the four recipient countries emphasizes treatment capacity, disease surveillance, vaccination (where relevant), safe water access, sanitation, and direct community engagement amid the ongoing outbreaks.
