Irregular Border Crossings in the EU Decrease by 37% in the First Half of 2026

WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – Across the European Union, the number of irregular border crossings declined by 37% during the initial seven months of 2026, according to early Frontex data. The agency reported roughly 61,000 detections at the bloc’s external frontiers from January 1 to July 31, a significant decrease compared to the same period in 2025. Most key migration routes experienced fewer crossings in this timeframe. These figures represent the latest assessment of unauthorized entry activity at the EU’s external borders.

The Eastern Mediterranean remained the most active route, recording 20,232 detections. This marked a 28% reduction from 28,068 during the same months last year. The Central Mediterranean followed with 16,454 detections, which is a 55% decrease from 36,656. Collectively, these two pathways contributed around 60% of all detections reported at the EU’s external borders. Libya continued to be the primary country of departure on the Central Mediterranean route during the seven-month period.

In contrast, the Western Mediterranean experienced an uptick, with 11,217 detections—an increase of 37% from 8,175 in the previous year. Sea crossings on this route reached 8,648, compared with 7,096 in 2025. Land detections through June totaled 2,569, up from 1,079. The Western African route saw a 60% decline, with 4,682 detections. Crossings through the Western Balkans decreased by 26% to 4,910, while Eastern Land Border crossings fell 44% to 3,209.

European border detections are predominantly along Mediterranean routes

Additional data concerning crossings through the United Kingdom revealed a notable drop in crossings attempting or succeeding in leaving the EU. Frontex recorded 22,469 such attempts, a 46% decrease from 41,647. These Channel crossing figures are not included in the overall EU entry totals. The agency also noted 281 detections on the circular route to Albania, a 9% rise. The seven-month data excludes extraordinary border incidents in Ceuta, Spain, at the end of July.

Frontex based its analysis on preliminary EUROSUR data and estimates available as of Aug. 4, noting that revisions could occur as authorities update their records. The reported figures count detections rather than individual persons, meaning that a single individual may be counted multiple times if detected at different locations or times. This distinction is crucial when comparing route-specific totals to the total number of people involved, as it applies across the agency’s external border dataset.

Seven-month data sustain the decline seen in the first half of 2026

These recent figures reinforce the downward trend noted after the first six months of 2026, when Frontex reported over 49,000 irregular border crossings—also a 37% decrease year-on-year. During that period, detections along the Western Mediterranean were 17% higher than in the previous year. However, the seven-month comparison indicates a 37% increase. The Western African route experienced a 67% decline through June and a 60% decline by July.

According to the agency, approximately 3,800 Frontex officers are deployed at the EU’s external borders. Their responsibilities include supporting national authorities in border management and conducting operations focused on saving lives at sea. These officers also assist member states with compliance under the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. The latest data reflect uneven route trends, with substantial declines across most major corridors, except for an increase along the Western Mediterranean route.
