BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Europe is anticipated to surpass previous records for wind energy deployment in 2026, following the addition of 8.8 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity during the first half of the year. This marks a 30% rise compared to the same period in 2025. The latest industry data from WindEurope reveals that these newly operational turbines produce enough electricity to power nearly 7 million households across Europe and help displace fossil fuel imports equivalent to 25 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers annually. The continent’s momentum, driven by vigorous activity over the summer months, is accelerating its transition toward cleaner energy sources.

Germany led the regional expansion during the first half of the year, contributing 3.4 GW of new capacity—around 40% of all new wind power added in Europe. Over 500 individual wind turbines came online in Germany, including 423 onshore and 84 offshore units. Other countries such as Denmark, Poland, Portugal, and France also reported notable capacity increases. Even amid ongoing conflict conditions, Ukraine managed to add more than 400 MW of operational wind capacity, while Belgium brought an additional 60 MW online to its national grid.
Forecasts published in WindEurope’s Autumn Report project that by the end of 2026, Europe will have added a total of 24 GW of wind capacity, setting a new record for annual installations. While Germany sped up its deployment by granting permits for over 9 GW of new onshore wind capacity in the first half of 2026, permitting processes have slowed in several key markets, including France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Ireland. The sector remains optimistic about the overall record year for wind power installations, but industry leaders warn that bureaucratic delays in grid connection approvals could threaten future project timelines.
In a public statement accompanying the report, WindEurope CEO Tinne Van der Straeten expressed optimism that 2026 could set a new record for wind installations, yet she emphasized that maintaining this momentum depends on government decisions on permitting procedures, auction structures, grid expansion, and industrial electrification in the coming months. She highlighted that these factors will be crucial in determining whether the sector can sustain its current growth pace.
Onshore Turbines Make Up the Majority of New Capacity Additions
To ensure continued expansion, the trade organization outlined five key policy priorities for EU authorities and member states. These include implementing simplified permitting procedures, expanding regional transmission infrastructure, channeling Emissions Trading System revenues into industrial electrification projects, and establishing a binding renewable energy target for 2040. Under current baseline scenarios, Europe’s total wind capacity is projected to reach 436 GW by 2030, which would supply 27% of the EU’s total electricity demand.
Upcoming ministerial meetings are expected to review these policy recommendations, with federal ministries and European regulators closely monitoring the progress of national turbine installations and auction results through official trade portals. These efforts aim to ensure continued compliance with the EU’s decarbonization goals.
