STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN / RankWire.AI / – Amidst ongoing shifts in Sweden’s economic landscape, the country’s industrial activity experienced mixed signals in June. Official data indicated a 1.5% decrease in industrial production compared to the same month last year. Additionally, when adjusted for seasonal effects, output declined by 0.4% from May, pointing to a softer month for the manufacturing sector. The figures were released by Statistics Sweden as part of its June Production Value Index report. The industrial index reached 112.4, down from 112.9 in May, with 2021 serving as the base year set at 100.

This annual downturn follows a revised 7.6% growth in May. Manufacturing output fell by 1.0% compared to June 2025, while mining and quarrying experienced a sharp decline of 13.8%. On a month-to-month basis, manufacturing contracted by 0.4%, and mining and quarrying decreased by 3.3%. Industry’s contribution to the broader private-sector measure for 2025 accounted for 20.2%, with manufacturing making up 19.4 percentage points of that total, underscoring its dominance within the industrial sector.
Despite the June decline, overall industry performance for the second quarter remained positive. The average industrial production from April through June was 4.0% higher than in the same period in 2025. Seasonally adjusted data also showed a 4.8% increase from the previous three months. Broader private-sector production in Sweden experienced a modest rise of 0.4% from May and 1.8% compared to a year earlier, encompassing industries, services, construction, and select utility activities.
Industrial slowdown contrasts with broader economic growth
The services sector saw a slight decrease of 0.2% from May but still grew 3.0% from June 2025. Construction output expanded by 2.0% month-over-month and increased 7.6% from the previous year. The services index was at 111.9 in June, down marginally from 112.1 in May, while the construction index climbed to 94.9 from 93.0. Services accounted for 67.2% of the broader measure, with construction contributing 8.4%.
Separate data from Statistics Sweden showed a significant jump in total industrial orders during June, rising 32.3% from May after seasonal adjustment. On a calendar basis, orders increased by 29.9% from June 2025. Export orders grew by 56.5% month-over-month and by 57.6% compared to the same month last year. Meanwhile, domestic orders saw a slight increase of 0.1% from May but fell 7.4% annually. From January through June, total orders were 4.0% higher than in the same period of 2025, with export orders up 6.6%.
Export orders climb sharply while domestic orders decline annually
Transport equipment experienced the most substantial growth among key order categories in June, increasing by 101.0% from May and 118.2% from the previous year. Manufacturing orders also rose significantly, up 33.2% month-over-month and 31.2% annually. Orders for capital goods increased by 45.5% from May and 50.7% from June 2025. Conversely, orders in mining and quarrying declined by 1.8% in the month and 19.0% from the prior year.
It is important to note that the production and order reports measure different facets of industrial activity. The Production Value Index tracks monthly changes in private-sector goods and service output at constant prices, whereas the orders series reflects short-term fluctuations in new industrial orders both domestically and internationally. The figures for June are preliminary and subject to revision as new information becomes available. The next updates are scheduled for September 10 and will cover July 2026.
