Updated US Travel Advisory for Belgium Emphasizes Crime and Security Concerns

    August 6, 2026
Facebook WhatsApp Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Telegram Tumblr Email Reddit VKontakte

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – Amid ongoing concerns over safety, the U.S. State Department has revised its travel advisory for Belgium, urging Americans to exercise increased caution due to issues related to crime, terrorism, and unrest. The advisory issued on July 23 maintains Belgium at Level 2 on the department’s four-tier scale. Authorities have expanded the warning to include crime and civil disturbances and have updated the summary of potential risks. Importantly, the update does not advise travelers to avoid visiting Belgium altogether. Level 2 recommends that visitors take extra precautions and review official safety guidance prior to travel.

US updates Belgium travel advisory over crime and unrest
Belgium remains at Level 2 under updated US travel guidance on crime and unrest.

The advisory notes that petty crimes are frequently reported in well-frequented tourist hotspots. Common offenses involve purse snatching and pickpocketing, which often target foreigners. The State Department also issues warnings about robberies, thefts of electronics, and stolen items from vehicles. Particular attention is drawn to major cities, dining establishments, train stations, bus stops, trams, and the Brussels metro, especially at night. Travelers are advised to keep valuables close, carry limited cash and identification, and stay vigilant in crowded environments to avoid becoming targets.

The update highlights an uptick in bag thefts on trains, notably along the route between Brussels and Amsterdam. Thieves tend to target light bags kept on overhead racks. Officials recommend that travelers keep cash, passports, and other valuables within reach at all times. Drivers are also cautioned to lock vehicle doors, shut windows, and avoid leaving belongings in plain sight inside parked cars. Belgian Federal Police have warned that thieves often work in groups, using crowding, bumps, or staged distractions to steal wallets, phones, and travel bags.

Focus on Crime and Transportation Dangers

The terrorism section states that violent acts and related threats remain present in Belgium. Locations such as public events, hotels, restaurants, places of worship, educational institutions, parks, shopping districts, and transportation hubs are considered potential targets. The guidance emphasizes that terrorists and their supporters may attack U.S. citizens abroad. Currently, Belgium’s Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis rates the national threat level at Level 3, categorizing it as serious. On the four-point scale used, officials view a Level 3 threat as possible and likely.

The updated advisory also underscores the importance of caution during demonstrations and strikes. While most protests are peaceful, they can disrupt transport services and essential public functions. The State Department notes protests often arise from political or economic concerns, or coincide with major holidays and large-scale events. Police routinely monitor demonstrations, and travelers are advised to steer clear of crowds. Checking local updates, paying attention to traffic advisories, and adjusting travel plans during delays or closures are recommended steps for visitors.

Recommendations for Travelers to Stay Prepared and Vigilant

U.S. officials suggest that travelers enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, known as STEP, before or during their visit. This service provides alerts from the U.S. Embassy in Brussels and facilitates emergency contact with American citizens. It is also advisable to review Belgium’s entry regulations, local laws, and health guidelines. U.S. tourists can remain in Belgium without a visa for up to 90 days, and passports must be valid for at least three months beyond the intended departure date from the Schengen zone.

Travelers are encouraged to remain alert in tourist districts and near banks or ATMs. Monitoring local information and knowing how to contact emergency services are vital. In Belgium, the emergency number 112 is used for life-threatening situations across Europe, while 101 connects to local police. The U.S. Embassy in Brussels offers consular assistance to American visitors. The July update maintained the advisory at the same level but added details about crime and unrest to the overall risk summary for those planning to visit Belgium.
