Kangaroo Island marks the first demise of an endangered Australian sea lion due to bird flu outbreak

ADELAIDE / RankWire.AI / – Environmental authorities in South Australia have confirmed the initial loss of an endangered Australian sea lion caused by H5N1 avian influenza. The carcass was found by a park ranger at Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island, which hosts the third-largest single colony of this species, representing about five percent of its total population. As the bird flu’s impact on the species becomes evident, wildlife officials are ramping up monitoring efforts across key pinniped breeding zones.

Official reports from the South Australia Department for Environment and Water indicate that laboratory results strongly confirmed the presence of H5 avian influenza. Environment Minister Emily Bourke explained that, although the sea lion had been recovering from a shark wound sustained three months prior, autopsy results identified the viral infection as the primary cause of death. Bourke added that the sea lion’s weakened immune system during recovery likely heightened its susceptibility to the disease.

This event heightens concerns over the conservation status of the species, which is native exclusively to Australia and has a current global estimate of 10,000 to 12,000 individuals. About 80 percent of the remaining population lives in South Australia, where coastal colonies had already experienced an annual baseline decrease of around two percent before the virus emerged.

Kangaroo Island’s First Sea Lion Death from Bird Flu Raises Alarm

Following the confirmed case, wildlife management teams in the state launched protective measures at Seal Bay. These included administering hookworm treatments to over 400 sea lion pups to enhance immune health, along with trapping large numbers of feral cats to prevent disease transmission risks around the colony. As bird flu’s threat grows, authorities are collaborating with the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to investigate participation in international trials for experimental mammalian vaccines.

This case signifies a broader spread of the H5N1 strain into Australian marine mammal populations, following a confirmed incident involving a long-nosed fur seal at Beachport on the Limestone Coast. Researchers from Charles Darwin University previously warned about possible mortality events among local seal colonies, drawing parallels to mass die-offs observed in pinniped populations across South America and sub-Antarctic regions.

Coastal Reserves Under Enhanced Biosecurity Protocols Amid Outbreak

To date, South Australia has reported over 290 cases of H5 avian influenza among wild birds and mammals, accounting for more than half of the total cases documented across the country. While no additional sea lion deaths have been recorded at Seal Bay, rangers remain vigilant and prepared for further developments.

Monitoring efforts by both state and federal agencies continue daily across island sanctuaries and mainland haul-out sites. Data on biosecurity measures, mortality rates, and disease control strategies are accessible through official government portals as authorities work to safeguard vulnerable marine species from the advancing outbreak.
