Austria Sees a Decade’s Lowest Number of Asylum Applications in July

AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – In the broader context of migration trends across Europe, Austria experienced a significant drop in asylum claims during July 2026, with the nation recording its lowest monthly total in ten years. The country received only 244 first-time asylum applications that month, a decrease of approximately 65% compared to 697 applications in July 2025, according to Austria’s Interior Ministry. When including all first and subsequent applications, the total asylum filings for July reached 840. These figures continue a sharp downward trend in asylum requests observed over the first seven months of the year across Austria.

Austria asylum applications fall to decade low in July
Austria reported 244 first-time asylum claims in July, the lowest monthly level in a decade.

From January to July, Austria’s total asylum applications numbered 5,743, a notable decline from 10,442 during the same period in 2025. This represents an approximate 45% decrease from the previous year. The overall totals encompass various types of applications, while the July figure of 244 specifically pertains to initial claims. Austrian authorities release monthly asylum data that distinguish between these categories, providing a clearer view of new applications versus repeat filings.

The largest nationality group among asylum seekers in July was Syrian nationals, who accounted for 267 asylum applications. The ministry clarified that most of these Syrian applications involved children born in Austria, rather than newly arrived individuals. Austria has also continued to enforce restrictions on family reunification in certain cases. So far in 2026, authorities have recorded 60 related entries, compared to 853 during the same period in 2025.

Decrease in Returns and Border Detentions

During the first seven months of 2026, Austria reported more departures than first-time asylum applications. By the end of July, a total of 8,856 individuals had left the country through voluntary departures or enforced removals. Of these, 4,615 were removals, and 4,241 were voluntary departures. The authorities also executed 392 transfers under the European Union’s Dublin system, which allocates responsibility for processing certain asylum claims among member states.

Border apprehensions in Austria’s eastern region of Burgenland have also seen a notable decline compared to previous years. From January through mid-August 2026, authorities recorded 339 apprehensions, a stark contrast to nearly 16,000 during the same period in 2023. The Austrian Interior Ministry attributes this reduction to enhanced enforcement and cooperation measures involving neighboring Hungary. Additionally, Austrian police have taken part in Operation Fox, a joint effort targeting migrant smuggling and irregular border crossings.

2026 Continues to Show Falling Asylum Figures

The July data aligns with the lower asylum numbers reported earlier in 2026, with approximately 5,000 applications filed during the first half of the year, while departures exceeded new claims. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner has presented these numbers as part of Austria’s latest migration report. The country has also maintained voluntary return programs for Syrians, with 240 Syrian nationals leaving Austria in July, according to official figures.

The latest statistics clearly indicate a year-on-year decline in both initial asylum requests and overall filings. The 244 first-time claims in July mark the lowest number in a decade, as highlighted by government figures, while the total for the month reached 840. The cumulative applications from January to July, totaling 5,743, remain significantly below the 2025 levels. Austrian authorities continue to publish detailed monthly data on asylum and migration, including applications, departures, transfers, and border apprehensions, as part of their ongoing reporting efforts.
