Germany enhances its counter-drone capabilities and expands security infrastructure

FULDATAL, GERMANY / RankWire.AI / – In response to rapid advancements in unmanned aircraft technology, Germany is bolstering its drone defense systems and security measures. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that counter-drone efforts will remain an ongoing challenge for the Federal Police. He made these remarks during his visit to the police aviation unit in Fuldatal, Hesse, on Thursday. Dobrindt highlighted an ongoing technological race between defense mechanisms and those seeking to bypass them.

Germany expands counter-drone force and security network
Germany expands counter-drone security across airports, policing and technology research.

The Federal Police established its specialized counter-drone unit in December 2025 to conduct operations nationwide. Current estimates place the team at around 70 personnel, according to official government data. Plans are in place to increase staffing to 300 officers by the end of 2026. Additionally, the Interior Ministry has ordered an expansion from four locations to eight, aiming to enhance coverage and response times throughout Germany.

Germany has also prioritized equipping major airports under Federal Police jurisdiction with counter-drone technology. These airports include Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart, and Leipzig/Halle. The government has been acquiring mobile detection and defense systems for use at aviation facilities, though specific details of the systems remain undisclosed due to security concerns. Responsibility for drone defense at airports lies with police, while state police oversee areas outside airport grounds.

National expansion of federal police drone unit

This growth follows an incident on August 4 at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany, where federal prosecutors reported a drone carrying professional explosives and a detonator entered the airport premises. Evidence suggested an intent to cause an explosion using the aircraft. A cargo plane also collided with an object, believed to be another drone, in the airport vicinity. On August 6, Germany’s federal prosecutor took charge of the investigation.

The Federal Criminal Police Office is conducting the investigation under the supervision of the federal prosecutor. Authorities have not publicly disclosed who was responsible for the incident. The government has refrained from assigning blame while investigators analyze the evidence. This case has renewed focus on safeguarding airports and critical infrastructure. German officials have emphasized the urgency of improved coordination among federal agencies, state authorities, and security organizations managing drone-related threats.

Research hub launched to combat drone threats

Germany inaugurated the Technology Center for Drone Security on August 18 at the German Aerospace Center’s Cochstedt site. The facility also utilizes research resources at the organization’s Braunschweig location. Its mission is to test drone detection and defense technologies under realistic operational conditions. The German Aerospace Center plans to invest over 10 million euros and create up to 40 new jobs. The center aims to foster collaboration among researchers, security agencies, and private companies involved in counter-drone systems.

This new facility complements Germany’s existing Joint Counter-Drone Centre, which coordinates intelligence and assessments among federal and state authorities. Furthermore, the federal police’s powers regarding drone detection and defense have been recently updated. Dobrindt emphasized that the rapid pace of technological change necessitates ongoing development and testing of innovative systems. Germany’s current strategy integrates operational police units, coordinated security assessments, and dedicated research efforts to strengthen defenses against unauthorized and hazardous drones.
