UN Calls for Accelerated Global Response as Ebola Outbreak in DRC Continues to Spread

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher has issued an urgent plea for increased international efforts as the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo expands into six provinces. Fletcher emphasized to UN member states that the epidemic is progressing more rapidly than previous Ebola outbreaks. He urged governments and donors to boost funding and facilitate access for humanitarian teams. This appeal comes amid rising infection rates, ongoing insecurity, and mounting strain on medical infrastructure across eastern and northern regions of the country.

UN urges faster global action as DRC Ebola outbreak spreads
DRC Ebola response expands as health authorities confront rising cases across six provinces.

The World Health Organization reported on September 1 that the outbreak had exceeded 6,000 confirmed cases, with nearly 3,000 fatalities. The epidemic now impacts 60 health zones across the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Bas-Uélé, and Tshopo. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described this as the second-largest Ebola epidemic recorded and the fastest-moving outbreak in history. Since the onset of the crisis, Ituri remains the epicenter of transmission, accounting for the majority of cases.

The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus and was first identified in May 2026. WHO has classified the situation as a public health emergency of international concern. As of August 26, the agency reported 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths in the DRC, with totals surpassing 6,000 shortly thereafter. Additionally, 1,293 recoveries had been documented by that date. Health officials continue active surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory testing, clinical treatment, and community engagement efforts across affected regions.

Conflict and fragile health infrastructure hinder Ebola containment

The Ebola crisis is unfolding amidst a broader humanitarian emergency in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fletcher noted that nearly 11 million people are in need of humanitarian aid due to conflict, displacement, food insecurity, and malnutrition. Violence in parts of eastern DRC has hampered access for health and relief personnel. The United Nations has ramped up its response since activating an emergency mechanism on June 9, establishing operational humanitarian hubs in Bunia and Beni to support field activities.

Frontline healthcare workers face significant dangers during the response. Fletcher stated that over 40 health workers have lost their lives to Ebola, with treatment centers and ambulances subjected to attacks. WHO data earlier recorded 151 confirmed infections among health and care staff, including 44 fatalities, as of July 30. Agencies have prioritized infection control, safe clinical practices, and enhanced protection for responders. WHO also highlighted that untracked transmission chains and deaths outside of treatment facilities continue to complicate efforts to contain the outbreak.

Funding and vaccine development efforts increase amid rising case numbers

The revised 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for the Democratic Republic of the Congo allocates $2.1 billion, with $300 million designated for Ebola-related initiatives. Fletcher appealed for more flexible and increased international funding to support both the outbreak response and the broader humanitarian operations. Separately, WHO indicated that a government-led six-month Ebola response plan requires $1.3 billion. The organization urged member states to accelerate their contributions as authorities expand surveillance, treatment capacity, laboratory services, community outreach, and other public health measures.

On September 1, WHO also released updated guidance on vaccines as researchers explore options against the Bundibugyo Ebola strain. The agency stated that current evidence is insufficient to confirm whether the licensed Ervebo vaccine offers meaningful protection against this species in humans. It recommended administering the vaccine only within research protocols while clinical trials generate further data. WHO and Africa CDC continue to support the Congolese government’s efforts to identify cases, break transmission chains, and safeguard communities across the six affected provinces.
